The struggles of an artist’s life are re-examined through a modern urban lens by these two critically acclaimed novelists. In Spiotta’s Stone Arabia, a fifty-year-old musician sinks away from public life until his niece begins to make a film about him, bringing many vulnerabilities to the surface. Fitch’s Paint it Black unravels the painful aftermath of the suicide of the son of a renowned pianist. Both novels, set in Los Angeles, vibrantly depict characters who are inspired and destroyed by music—and question the consequences of being an artist.

Admission to the event, where you’ll get to eat food from all the finalists while enjoying your fill of delicious street food. And, since the Vendy Awards LA are a benefit event for non-profit organizations, your $40 ticket is tax-deductible. Children under 10 are free.
The Vendys are a street food cook-off that, since 2005, has determined the best street chef in Los Angeles. It has become one of the greatest food events in Los Angeles. Langer’s Delicatessen, a mainstay in Los Angeles for the past 65 years, is celebrating its anniversary by offering free #19 pastrami sandwiches for everyone. (Two rules: No to-go orders, and only one sandwich per customer.) The deli will be opened late, and visitors who are arriving by the Metro can show their ticket stubs and enter in an hourly drawing to win a $100 gift certificate for Langer’s.
